What Are PFAS and Why Are They Dangerous?
PFAS were used for decades in non-stick cookware, food packaging, firefighting foam, stain-resistant fabrics and dozens of industrial applications. They've since leached into groundwater and surface water supplies nationwide.
Long-term exposure to PFAS has been linked to serious health concerns including:
- Increased risk of certain cancers including kidney and testicular cancer
- Thyroid disease and hormone disruption
- Immune system effects, including reduced vaccine effectiveness in children
- High cholesterol and cardiovascular effects
- Developmental effects in infants and children
The EPA has set new maximum contaminant levels for several PFAS compounds — meaning water utilities must now test for and address PFAS in public water supplies. However, private well owners have no such protection and must test and treat their own water.
Are PFAS in Hernando County Water?
PFAS contamination has been detected in water systems across Florida. While Hernando County's municipal water system does testing, levels can vary and regulations continue to evolve. Private well users in rural areas of Hernando, Pasco and Citrus County are particularly at risk since well water is not regulated the same way as municipal supplies.
